Splicing protocols (Splicing)
Recommended methods to ensure strong, reliable joints
Ready for splicing — carrier rope ends, Kenbest® fid, William Kenyon® safety knife, adhesive tape and marker.
Mark both ends approximately 18 in. (46 cm) and 40 in. (91 cm) from the end.
Push back the braided basket, insert one rope end, then release. To ensure a good grip on the rope, compress the basket with your fingers. Insert the fid tip at the 18 in. (46 cm) mark on the opposite end.
Pass the fid through the rope and bring it out at the 40 in. (91 cm) mark.
To create a proper taper, pull the end through, then mark approximately 12 in. (38 cm) and 7 in. (18 cm). Insert the William Kenyon® lock-back safety knife at the 12 in. (38 cm) mark and slightly lift a group of strands. Cut and remove. Repeat at the 7 in. (18 cm) mark.
Tapered end. Completely bury the end inside the center of the rope.
Repeat steps 2 to 6 for the opposite end.
