Splicing Instructions with Needle |
Step
1
Lay the two ends of the rope on the bench as shown. Mark off with
pen points ABC and XYZ respectively as shown to the measurements given.
The two ends are referred to as Ropes or Ends 1 (shown here as the
red rope) and 2 (as the yellow). Unplait the last 50 mm of each end
|
|
Step 2
Cut off approximately half the number of unplaited threads. |
 |
 |
Step
3
Always insert the needle between plaits - never between the threads.
This is essential to avoid thread damage and to obtain maximum rope
life. |
Step
4
Inserting the needle in rope 1 at point C, draw rope onto the needle
so that the needle eye emerges at B. Thread unplaited end of rope
2 into the needle eye. |
 |
 |
Step
5
Grasp rope 1 firmly between C and B and pull rope 2 through rope 1
until point Y almost touches point B. Point X will now be well beyond
point C. |
Step
6
Remove the needle from end 2 which is left exposed. Now insert the
needle in rope 2 at point Z. Draw rope 2 over the needle until the
eye emerges at Y. Thread end 1 into the eye. Grasping rope 2 between
Y and Z pull end 1 through rope 2. Pull end 1 out and remove the needle. |
 |
 |
Step 7
Grasp the centre of splice B-Y firmly in the right hand and end 1
at A in the left and pull taught. Repeat the process pulling end 2 taught.
Starting at 300 mm from both rope ends, cut through one strand of
braid and remove. Repeat at 35 mm intervals until 7 strands have been
shortened giving a long taper. |
Step 8
Hold splice firmly at B-Y and stroke rope 1 towards C, smoothing as
you go. End 2 will be drawn into rope 1. Now repeat the process by
stroking rope 2 towards Z. End 1 will now be drawn into rope 2. Still
holding at B-Y pull taught at K and then repeat at the other end. If
any inner tail is left outside the outer braid cut off sufficient
for it to be completely hidden. |
